George S. Mentzer memoir, 2005.

Collection contains George S. Mentzer's memoir entitled, "My World War II experiences: PFC George S. Mentzer, U.S. Army, 1943-1945, European Theatre." Mentzer details basic training, duties as a driver, and his participation in the Normandy invasion on Utah Beach on D + 10 as a member of the 83d Infantry Division with machine gunner duties. He describes his participation in the battles of the hedgerow country, the liberation of France, and the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded. After returning to England, he had the opportunity to participate as an air crew member on a B-17 for which he claimed Air Corps gunner's wings; however, this does not appear on his DD214.
